Resumo: Phytophrhoro palmivora was found to be consistently more virulent than P. capsici on attached and detached pods, germinated seeds, and seedling stems of a range of cacao Iypes. Since P. capsici is probably the predominant species on cacao pods in Bahia, it was concluded thal future routine screening for resistance should be carried out with both species. Among 20 cultivars screened for resistance to P. palmivora and P. capsici, EET 59. Scavina 6 and UF 713 showed most promising resistance to both species. Not all cultivars showed the same reaction to infection by the two species, the most notable example being "Catongo" which was classed as moderately resistant to P. capsici but susceptible to P. palmivora.
