Resumo: Two species of the Culicoides discrepans group were reared from liquid secreted in the infloresoences of Calathea spp. (Marantaceae): C dicrourus Wirth and Blanton in Valie, Colombia, and C. macieli Tavares and Ruiz in Bahia, Brazil. They are described and illustrated , including the unusual larvae and pupae. The larvae possess unusually long body setae and the pupae are characterized by long, slender, caudal processes and greatly elongated abdominal tubereles with long setae. The discrepans group is formally characterized and a key is given for identification of the eight known species, which are all Neotropical.
