Resumo: f'orcipomyia (Forcipomyia)harpegonata n. sp. is described in ali stages from Puerto Rico. The species also occurs from the Bahamas through the West Indies and in Central and South America from Costa Rica to Brazil. lts range coincides close ly with a related species, F. gelmaJis (Loew), that occurs from the southern United States through Mexico, Centra I and South America to southern Brazil, and across the West Indies to Bermuda a nd the island of São Tomé near Africa. Both species are common in cacao plantations, breeding in rotting cacao leaves and husks and the adults frequenting cacao flowers. The larval habitats of both species include a wide range of decaying plant materiais. Diagnostic characters of adults and larvae are figured for both species.
